Excerpt from The Causes and Treatment of Lateral Curvature of the Spine This work, the first edition of which appeared in 1868, was almost entirely rewritten when a fourth edition was needed about six years ago. Concerning the motive which caused me to undertake such a task, I venture to quote a few passages from the preface affixed to that edition. "Probably every one who has had much to do with the treatment of scoliosis, of necessity a gradual process, must have been troubled with the difficulty of ascertaining with accuracy improvement or the reverse, still more, of computing the amount of either. Yet a reliable means of doing so is essential - scientifically, because without it we cannot know - practically, because a surgeon in full work cannot possibly remember, after several days, the exact aspect of many backs. His views as to the progress of the case are therefore founded upon mere impression, and may be quite opposed to that of the patient herself or of her relatives.
